Yes, a notary public in Ontario can notarize a Power of Attorney POA . Hereʼs what you need to know about the process:
Steps to Notarize a Power of Attorney in Ontario
Prepare the Power of Attorney Document:
Ensure that your Power of Attorney document is complete and includes all necessary information, such as the names of the grantor (the person giving the power) and the attorney (the person receiving the power), and the specific powers being granted.
Visit a Notary Public:
Bring the Power of Attorney document to a notary public. Our office provides Walk- in Notary service at Unit 2, 1033 Wyandotte Street West, Windsor, ON, N9A 5Y6, No appointment needed unless you require extra witness.
Bring Identification:
Both the grantor and the attorney (if they are present) should bring valid government-issued identification, such as a driverʼs license or passport. The notary public needs to verify the identities of the parties involved.
Sign in the Presence of the Notary:
The grantor must sign the Power of Attorney document in the presence of the notary public. The attorney may also be required to sign in the notaryʼs presence, depending on the type of POA.
Notarization:
The notary public will witness the signing, then sign and affix their seal to the document, certifying that they have witnessed the signature(s) and verified the identity of the parties involved.
Copies:
It is a good practice to make several notarized copies of the Power of Attorney document for use by the attorney and for your own records.
