In Ontario Remote/online commissioning (for affidavits, statutory declarations, oaths, etc.) is legally permitted under Ontario Regulation 431/20 (Administering Oath or Declaration Remotely) under the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act. Many services offer this via secure video calls.
Full notarization (e.g., certifying true copies, certain signatures for international use, or acts under the Notaries Act) generally requires physical presence. The Law Society of Ontario (LSO) clarified in February 2025 that online notary services are not permitted under the Notaries Act without specific regulations, which do not currently exist. Services advertising “online notarization” often mean remote commissioning.
How to Notarize a Document Online

Scheduling: You book an appointment with a notary public in advance.
Identity Verification: The notary connects with you through a video call, such as Zoom or a similar platform. During the virtual meeting, you provide valid identification through your webcam or smartphone camera, and the notary verifies your identity and the authenticity of your documents.

Notarization: Once you complete these steps to notarize your document online, the notary applies their signature and seal, then sends the completed file to you electronically.
